Switch to a greener bank

Many high profile banks are still heavily invested in the fossil fuel industry.

Supporting a bank that doesn't invest in fossil fuels is a great step forward in the fight against climate change.

Brewing instructions:

  • Step 1

Find out if your bank is invested fossil fuels

This page from the rainforest action network shows how some of the major UK and world banks are still invested in fossil fuels.

You can also contact your bank directly to ask them if they are invested in fossil fuels, and if they plan to stop.

  • Step 2

Switch to a more ethical bank

The good shopping guide has a list of ethical banks and building societies that takes into account the environmental impact of each bank.

Switching your current account is now easier than ever thanks to the switch guarantee that most banks are signed up to, and switching can be done in around 7 days.

  • Step 3

Tell others to do the same

A lot of people simply don't realise their bank has investments in fossil fuels. Simply sharing this page or the resources mentioned can help more people to make the switch and send a message to our banks to divest from fossil fuels.

Why is this important?

The fossil fuel industry will continue as normal if investment continues to flow in — That's why divestment is an incredibly powerful action to take against climate change. It's a clear, unequivocal vote for a cleaner future built on renewable energy, and away from fossil fuels.

All banks could choose to divest from the fossil fuel industry, by choosing a bank that's already doing so it will create a higher incentive for the rest to follow suit.
